What Wire Mesh Alloys Are Available?

In the world of woven wire mesh, there are five predominant alloys used. They are

  • Stainless steel
  • Copper
  • Aluminum
  • Nickel
  • Steel

Corrosion resistance is the main advantage of stainless steel, stainless steel is also high and low temperature resistant, easily fabricated, strong and durable, easy cleaned and maintained etc.

Copper is ductile, malleable and has high thermal and electrical conductivity. As a result, the pure copper mesh is popularly used as architectural & shielding applications.

Aluminum wire mesh is lightweight; when compared to its stainless steel counterpart, aluminum mesh is approximately 1/3rd the weight of stainless. Aluminum wire mesh is also corrosion resistant in most normal environments

Nickel and nickel alloy oxidizes slowly under room temperature, an oxide layer forms on the surface and prevents further corrosion, the nickel takes excellent corrosion resistance to alkaline and neutral solution such as carbonate, chloride, nitrate solution and fatty acid, its property is also stable in air, fresh water and sea water.

Steel is an alloy of iron with a carbon content that can range from 0.03% to 1,075% of its composition, depending on its grade.Steel retains the metal characteristics of iron in its purest form, but the addition of carbon and other elements either metallic or non-metallic improves its physical-chemical properties, especially its resistance.
